More and more people are finding out the hard way that the prescription drugs that they are taking for their ailments are making them sicker than the disease that they are supposed to be treating. I have met with nurses at nursing homes who had patients taking several prescription drugs and became too sick to care for themselves.  The nurses stopped giving the medications and in short order the patients were feeling better and able to care for themselves. Why did they get better? The most likely reason is that they were being “poisoned” by the drugs and after a period of time off the drugs they recovered. If people would hear about the negative side effects caused by many prescription drugs, they would be afraid to take them.

 

     The Pharmaceutical industry doesn’t recognize the use of herbs, vitamins and amino acids in the treatment of disease, this is also why we are witnessing increases in people using natural remedies.  Many people were not getting results from drugs so they researched themselves and discovered a much better way.

 

     When someone asks me about the safety of herbs I can tell them with absolute certainty and long experience that the herbs in their health food stores are safe.  We must remember that before modern medicine people treated disease by with herbal remedies.  When we here do research on any herbs we use a vast amount of sources here and internationally.  One source we like was published in London, England in the 1600’s and most all of the common herbs used today have been documented there.  In many cases they knew safe and effective cures back then that many don't know today.  We have the luxury of having much more knowledge today about herbs of course, because of terrific advances in science, but we first gained our knowledge base from our ancestors.  We have much to learn from the Chinese, American Indians, Israeli and European cultures in treating “Dis-ease”.  We must realize that we can’t treat symptoms, we must treat the "dis-ease" by giving the body what it needs to heal itself.  The late Dr. Hans Neiper said, 

 

“Toxic treatments do more harm than good in the long run.

The best physician is your own body.

We must strengthen, not weaken its defenses”.

 

     People in all countries must be able to have absolute free choice to use “alternative” treatments without a prescription.  We cannot afford to wait until the medical and pharmaceutical industry gets truthful to the public about the dangers of many prescription drugs.  Why is it, that we are losing the right to use herbs and alternative therapies?  It's all about big business isn't it?  The major Pharma companies want to monopolize the world's food and drugs and force us to comply by making it illegal for us to treat ourselves.

Diabetes on the Rise

It is estimated that a million people in America have Type 1 diabetes and 15 million have Type 2 diabetes. Over 135 thousand pregnant women acquire gestational diabetes and 1 in 600 children develops Type 1 diabetes. The World Health Organization projects more than 300 million people will have the disease by the year 2025. Currently, more than 135 million people worldwide with diabetes.  Diabetes is a very serious disease that can lead to blindness, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and limb amputations.  Figures from the American Diabetic Association show this disease is the fourth leading cause of death in America, killing 160,000 people each year.

Here is a list of some of the natural remedies that can be used to help with normalizing your blood sugar levels, rebuild the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas and help with retinopathy and neuropathy.

 

Inositol

Essential for calcium and insulin metabolism and production of lecithin. Aids in the movement of fat from the liver to the cells, essential for hair growth, growth of cells in the bone marrow, eye membrane and intestines. Aids in the reduction of blood pressure. Studies in rats have shown that supplementation with inositol may reverse some of the abnormalities of diabetic neuropathy.

 

Bis maltolato oxovanadium (BMOV)

Supports healthy blood sugar metabolism. This product is an advanced vanadium technology and is the result of the latest scientific studies. This unique compound is void of potential side-effects common to other vanadium preparations on the market. Contains vanadium-maltol-complex. Bitter Melon

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) contains an insulin-like protein that may help regulate sugar in the blood. Bitter melon has just in the last 50 or so years been heralded by the scientific community as a plant that can be used in the treatment of a number of ailments including diabetes mellitus, HIV-1, and psoriasis and has been determined to be beneficial in the fight against an additional number of viruses including herpes simplex I and II, herpes Zoster and polio due to MAP-30 (inhibitor of infection and replication) and Polypeptide-P. Though most research surrounding Momordica has been dedicated to finding a treatment for viral infections, especially HIV-1, there is considerable research which shows that bitter melon can effectively be used as an anti- diabetic. In one study M. charantia fruit extract depressed plasma glucose levels by 10-15% one hour after administration. In rats with induced diabetes, Momordica improved the oral glucose tolerance causing significant reduction in plasma glucose of 26% at 3.5 hours compared to metformin (a drug commonly administered for diabetes) which caused a 40-50% reduction. In other research administration of aqueous extracts of Momordica have been responsible for decreases in blood sugar levels of up to 50% and in as many as 73% of the patients investigated. The mechanism of action of Mormordica charantia appears to be partly attributed to increased glucose utilization in the liver rather than an insulin secretion effect.

 

Bilberry 4:1 Extract

Bilberry is used in connection with vascular and blood disorders and shows positive effects when treating varicose veins, thrombosis, and angina. Bilberry's fruit contains flavonoids and anthocyanins, which serve to prevent capillary fragility, thin the blood, and stimulate the release of vasodilators. Anthocyanin, a natural antioxidant, also lowers blood pressure, reduces clotting and improves blood supply to the nervous system. Bilberry also contains glucoquinine that has the ability to lower blood sugar.

 

B-Complex

All of the separate components of B-complex play very important roles in the health of the human body. Almost every function of the body requires the components of B-complex. Since it is a complex it should be supplemented that way. There are often ailments that require more of one of the B vitamins and that one should be taken by itself, however when any single B vitamin is taken by itself the complex should be used at the same time to keep the other B vitamins from becoming imbalanced. B-1, B-2, B-3, B-5, Choline, inositol, folic acid and all of the others must be supplemented to stay healthy and to regain your health.

 

Gymnema Sylvestre

Used to treat obesity and diabetes in India for over 2000 years. Studies have confirmed the blood sugar "balancing" effect of this herb. Has been shown in clinical trials to assist regeneration of the insulin-producing beta cells. It can reduce prescription insulin requirements for those diabetics who actively monitor blood sugar levels. Helps blood sugar stay within acceptable limits. Also helps to reduce "empty" calories in the body and helps the body to properly use ingested sugars.

 

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha Lipoic Acid is a vitamin-like antioxidant that has been used in Europe to restore liver health, treat diabetes-related neuropathy and radiation sickness, and confer protective benefits against oxidative processes involved in degenerative diseases and premature aging. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), also called thioctic acid, is more potent than vitamins C, E and Co-Q10, and according to Dr. Lester Packer, Professor of Molecular Biology at U.C. Berkeley, may be the most important antioxidant ever discovered. "The therapeutic potential of alpha-lipoic acid is just beginning to be explored," observed Packer, "but this compound holds great promise." In the diabetic it can help inhibit Glycation. Glycation is the damage to proteins caused by excess sugar. Glycation causes damage very similar to that caused by free radicals. The damaged proteins are not only in muscle and organ tissues, but integral components of cell membranes and enzymes. The cellular membrane and enzyme damage leads to dysfunction, disease and cellular death.

 

Vitamin C

Cunningham and colleagues, Department of Nutrition, University of Massachusetts, found that the cellular uptake of vitamin C is promoted by insulin and inhibited by hyperglycemia. If a rise in plasma vitamin C is uncoupled from insulin replacement in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), then the degree of hyperglycemia could account for “tissue scurvy” in IDDM. Leukocyte vitamin C is lower in IDDMs compared with non diabetics when vitamin C consumption is adequate; the author’s data suggest that this is a variable component of the pathophysiology of IDDM. Complications from diabetes mellitus are believed to result from either intracellular accumulation of sorbitol or non-enzymatic glycoxidation of proteins or both.

Regarding the abnormal cellular accumulation of sorbitol, vitamin C supplementation has been shown to be effective in several studies with adult diabetics.— Vitamin C’s role as an aldose reductase inhibitor and a water soluble antioxidant are potentially very important as adjuncts to tight glycemic control in the management of diabetes. Supplemental vitamin C intake may be required for tissue saturation and maximal physiological function in IDDM. Cunningham JJ. Research reveals that vitamin C complex from food sources is the best way to receive the needed amounts of vitamin C. However, it is impossible to eat enough of the raw sources of foods and herbs that would give your body enough. We are in search of a natural food-form vitamin C product that would give enough vitamin C per tablet to be reasonable for daily consumer use. We believe that Acerola berries are a very good source of vitamin C complex. However, it only contains 17% ascorbic acid. There are different beliefs about ascorbic acid. One side says that since most types of vitamin C products on the market are synthesized in a lab from d-glucose (corn sugar) that it alone should not be used because it is missing the naturally occurring bioflavonoid complex as well as the organic trace minerals and other co-factors which make up the organic food- form vitamin C. It is believed that even with a lower amount of actual ascorbic acid, the food-form is utilized by the body better because it is in its natural state.

The other side believes that it doesn’t really matter if the ascorbic acid is synthesized in a lab or if it is from a natural food source. They believe that only ascorbic acid is the benefit because all of the scientific studies proving the need for high intake of vitamin C has been done on ascorbic acid.

This brings us to the question of which one is best. The answer is possibly both. Food- form is always good so it makes sense to get vitamins and minerals, etc. from this source. However, since there is a lot of evidence showing the need for more ascorbic acid, then we would recommend supplementing with Ester-C®. This form of vitamin C has been combined with several different minerals thereby becoming a “mineral ascorbate”. It is a fact that when the body gets ascorbic acid from any source it has to convert it to a mineral ascorbate before it can be used by the body. Our conclusion is to use both forms and obtain the best of both, the food-form C and the in-vitro synthesized forms.

 

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

Organic Sulfur

Sulfur is a component of insulin, the hormone that regulates carbohydrate metabolism. Insufficient sulfur intake may result in decreased insulin production. It is also possible that a lack of bio-available sulfur would make the cells so rigid and impermeable that they become unable to absorb sugar from the blood efficiently leaving blood sugar levels elevated. Studies indicate that regular intake of MSM supplements, which cause the cell to become permeable could help balance blood sugar and allow the overworked pancreas to return to normal.

 

Uva Ursi

Most people know that uva ursi is used for urinary tract infections and other urinary

problems. However, it is also known as an excellent diabetes remedy for excessive sugar. Because of this herb’s ability to help the urinary tract and to reduce high blood sugar it is the perfect addition to any natural protocol for the diabetic. Most diabetics have urinary problems and uva ursi should most certainly help.

 

Fenugreek

Fenugreek has great potential in alleviating non-insulin dependent diabetes. In one study Indian researchers added about four ounces of powered fenugreek seeds a day for a period of ten days to the diets of people with insulin-dependent diabetes. With fenugreek added to their diet urinary sugar levels fell by 54 percent.

 

Juniper

Juniper is high in natural insulin and has the ability to restore the pancreas when there has been no permanent damage. It is excellent for disease prevention and infections. It is also helpful with cases of gout by lowering the uric acid in the body. It is also high in vitamin C complex. (Should not be used by Pregnant women or people with Kidney disease without first consulting your professional healthcare advisor.)

Diet & Diabetes

What and how much you eat can affect your risk of diabetes. A lack of dietary fiber along with over consumption of sugary foods, white flour products, saturated fats, and hydrogenated vegetable oil (margarine) may set you up for diabetes and other health risks. Eating beans and legumes may improve many aspects of the metabolism linked to diabetes. (Lancet 1 (1981): 1-5).

 

Foods high in sugar should not be eaten alone but should be accompanied by high-fiber foods.

Try to keep your fat calories below 30% of your total daily intake of foods.

50% of your total daily intake of food should be from complex carbohydrates.

Exercise at least every other day and try to lose weight if needed.



Wine as an Antibacterial

For centuries wine has been recognized as a digestive aid, but only recently have scientists determined that this effect may be due to its antibacterial properties. Weisse et al assessed the antibacterial activity of wine in comparison with other forms of ethanol and of bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto Bismol) against three kinds of bacteria that cause traveler's diarrhea: Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis serotype typhimurium, and Shigella sonnei. The bacterial test suspensions (105-106 colony-forming units/mL) were exposed to red wine (Portuguese table wine, 9% ethanol), white wine (California Chardonnay, 11% ethanol), absolute ethanol (diluted with sterilized tap water to 10% ethanol), tequila (diluted with sterilized tap water to 10% ethanol), and bismuth subsalicylate (35 mg/L). Sterilized tap water was used as a control.

Red and white wine proved to be superior to all the other solutions against the three bacteria tested. Both reduced the bacterial count to undetectable levels within 20 minutes of exposure. Bismuth subsalicylate was the next most effective agent, reducing E. coli to undetectable concentrations in 20 minutes, but requiring 60 and 120 minutes to reduce S. enteritidis and S. sonnei, respectively, to undetectable concentrations. Bismuth subsalicylate was substantially superior to the tequila solution against E. coli and S. enteritidis, but only marginally superior against S. sonnei. Diluted ethanol was the least effective, with virtually no antimicrobial effect, indicating that it is not the ethanol alone that is the antibacterial ingredient.

Further studies showed that neither pH nor gastric acid are the important antibacterial components. A solution with a pH comparable to wine reduced E. coli, S. enteritidis and S. sonnei concentrations by only a tenth in four hours, while simulated gastric juice reduced E. coli concentrations by a tenth in two hours. By comparison, wine reduced E. coli concentrations to about a millionth of the baseline level in 20 minutes. The investigators suggest that the active ingredient in wine may be a polyphenol liberated during fermentation that has shown activity against bacteria at an acid pH. The investigators concluded, "The antibacterial activity of red and white wine against enteropathogens may protect against bacterial diarrhea . . . and helps explain wine's legendary reputation as a digestive aid." Is There a Cure for Cardiovascular Disease? 

Latest Research Shows YES It’s Possible!

The latest research of natural remedies reveals to us that the use of certain natural ingredients can help to normalize the function of the heart and the entire circulatory system. Heart disease is one of the major killer dis-eases in the western world. There are many factors involved with cardiovascular disease. Improper diet, smoking, diabetes, viruses, bacterial infections, etc. Our research shows that the main cause of CVD is a breakdown of the vessel walls because of a lack of collagen therefore causing a “crack” or “break” in the wall. Because of the body’s natural defenses, it fills in this crack with plaque in order to stop “leakage”. To a degree this is good. However, it is a two-edged sword. The problem arises as this plaque continues to build up over time and eventually restricts blood flow. If the body wasn’t deficient in certain key natural ingredients obtainable from the diet, the deadly cycle that normally ends in a heart attack or stroke would never even begin. The following are the key ingredients found by modern research that have the ability to change the course of this dreaded problem. Yes, there is HELP for cardiovascular disease. Vitamin C

Canadian researchers as early as the late 1930s, 1940s and 1950s implicated low tissue levels of vitamin C as the cause of atherosclerosis. It was demonstrated in guinea pigs that a lesion (much like the human atherosclerotic lesion) could be induced in these animals by changing one factor in the diet, i.e., simply by restricting their vitamin C. In 1989 Linus Pauling and Matthias Rath, MD, duplicated these experiments while measuring a substance similar to LDL (or bad cholesterol) called lipoprotein(a) in the animals. After their experiments confirmed the association between vitamin C and lipoprotein(a), Linus Pauling declared that, in his opinion, cardiovascular disease can now be controlled, even cured, with the proper use of vitamin C and lysine. The Pauling/Rath theory is basically this: We humans do not make vitamin C. Over time our blood vessels tend to become weak and crack, especially when vitamin C in the diet is low. Lipoprotein(a) (or Lp(small-a)) has evolved as the surrogate for low vitamin C in the diet. Thought of another way, Lp(a)-based atherosclerotic plaques are Nature's "plaster cast" for arteries weak from insufficient collagen, a condition caused by too little vitamin C. Animals, on the other hand, generally make their own vitamin C (guinea pigs are an exception) and animals do not suffer the same kind of cardiovascular disease that commonly afflicts human beings. Animals make a lot of vitamin C, usually in the liver and this vitamin C enters the blood stream without first having to go through the animal's digestive track. One of the reasons that Linus Pauling said he consumed his 18 gms of vitamin C daily was because the average vitamin C production in animals is something like 9 gm of vitamin C every day, adjusting for body weight. Pauling also knew that about 1/2 of what we humans intake orally is either not absorbed or quickly excreted through the urinary tract. We believe that vitamin C supplementation should come from two sources. The first should come from food sources. Acerola fruit is the best choice because of its high vitamin C content. The second source should come from Ester-C®, this patented form of vitamin C has been converted into mineral ascorbates (ascorbic acid combined with calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc.). It is acid-free, so there is no stomach upset and, most importantly, it is at least 4 times more absorbable than any other form of vitamin C. So, fewer milligrams can be taken to receive the needed benefits of vitamin C in the body.

L-Lysine

According to Nobelist Linus Pauling, "If you are at risk of heart disease, or if there is a history of heart disease in your family, if your father or other members of the family died of a heart attack or stroke, or if you have a mild heart attack yourself then you had better be taking vitamin C and Lysine." [Linus Pauling, 1994 interview] It is now well established that Lp(a)-based atherosclerotic plaques bind to the Lysine Binding Site (LBS) in humans. A Nobel prize in medicine was awarded for this discovery. According to Pauling: "Knowing that lysyl residues are what causes lipoprotein(a) to get stuck to the wall of the artery and form atherosclerotic plaques, any physical chemist would say at once that the thing to do is prevent that by putting the amino acid lysine in the blood to a greater extent than it is normally. You need lysine to be alive, it is essential, you have to get about 1 gram a day to keep in protein balance, but you can take lysine, pure lysine, a perfectly non toxic substance in food [as supplements], which puts extra lysine molecules in the blood. They enter into competition with the lysyl residues on the wall of arteries and accordingly count to prevent Lp(a) from being deposited, or even will work to pull it loose and destroy atherosclerotic plaques." [Aug 1994 Linus Pauling interview].

L-Proline

Linus Pauling did not specifically recommend supplementing with the amino acid l-proline, but his former associate Matthias Rath, MD, does. There is research to indicate that proline in solution with vitamin C is up to 10 times more effective in dissolving plaque than lysine and vitamin C in the test tube. Another Lp(a) binding site, the Proline Binding Site (or PBS) has also recently been discovered. There seems to be good reason to add proline to your list of supplements. The protein collagen is formed from both lysine and proline with the help of vitamin C, so taking extra proline seems to make sense for this reason alone. However, our bodies do not rely on the diet for its proline needs as it does with vitamin C and lysine. We make our own proline, and some people may not be able to tolerate large amounts.

Vitamin E

A recent Harvard study brought vitamin E into the mainstream, as well it should be. Vitamin E has long been recognized for its "heart health" aspects, and for helping to prevent blood clots, etc.

 

Co-enzyme Q10 (Co-Q10)

According to respected MD Julian Whitaker, co-enzyme Q10 is one of the most important health discoveries this century, ranking with the discovery of antibiotics. Co-Q10 is required in many metabolic pathways for us to convert food to energy. Since the heart is always working, it has a high requirement for Co-Q10, and as we age, our cells apparently produce less of this important substance making supplementation advisable. Not too long ago, 10 mg to 50 mg was considered a large dose. Today, patients with congestive heart failure are being given between 200 and 300 mg daily, with results that prompt Whitaker's characterization. According to Dr. Whitaker and others, Europeans now consider congestive heart failure to be a Co-Q10 deficiency disease.

Magnesium

According to Lancet, gram amounts of magnesium (sulfate) used intravenously after a heart attack reduces the risk of death from 25% to 50%. Now considered a "first line of defense" by orthodox medicine, it seems wise to supplement magnesium daily. A study published in The Lancet, for example, reported the effects of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study in 2,316 patients with suspected myocardial infarction. The dose of magnesium was high (about 8.7 grams given intravenously over a 24 hour period), but the results were remarkable: magnesium reduced cardiovascular mortality by 25 percent. The author’s conclusion: "Intravenous magnesium sulfate is a simple, safe, and widely applicable treatment. Its efficacy in reducing early mortality of myocardial infarction is comparable to, but independent of, that of thrombolytic or antiplatelet therapy." These findings have been confirmed and reconfirmed in many clinics and laboratories. Teo and colleagues, for example, in an analysis of seven clinical studies, concluded that magnesium (in doses of 5-10 grams by intravenous injection) reduced the odds of death by an astounding 55 %" [Liebovitz, Journal of Optimal Nutrition] German authority Dr. Hans Nieper recommends 1 to 2 gm of magnesium orotate daily.

L-Carnitine

An important amino acid for muscle strength and health. The heart is our hardest working muscle. Common in red meats, it can be made by the body out of lysine.

Bromelain

German Dr. Hans Nieper, MD, recommended bromelain to his cancer patients. He discovered by accident that all cancer patients with angina pectoris found relief of their angina pain while taking this substance made from pineapples. There are important "anti clotting" properties to bromelain.

B-Complex Vitamins

Here are some important results of recent clinical studies: Vitamin C cuts heart disease rate almost in half (documented in 11,000 Americans over ten years) Vitamin E cuts heart disease rate by more than one third (documented in 36,000 Americans over six years.) Beta Carotene (pro-vitamin A) cuts heart disease rate almost in half (documented in 36,000 Americans). Serrapeptase

Serrapeptase digests dead tissue, blood clots, cysts, and arterial plaque. The late German physician Dr Hans Nieper used serrapeptase to treat arterial blockage in his coronary patients. A doctor who requested anonymity calls serrapeptase "miraculous". Dr X claims serrapeptase protects against stroke and is more effective and quicker than EDTA chelation treatments in removing arterial plaque. He also reports that serrapeptase dissolves blood clots and causes varicose veins to shrink or diminish. Dr X excitedly told of a woman scheduled for hand amputation and a man scheduled for bypass surgery who both recovered quickly without surgery after treatment with serrapeptase.

Serrapeptase is an anti-inflammatory proteolytic enzyme. It has the anti-inflammatory effects of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as aspirin, Motrin, Naprosyn, and so on, but without the side effects associated with these drugs. In Europe, it is used preferentially for a wide variety of conditions such as sinusitis, fibrocystic breast disease, post-trauma swelling, arthritis, idiopathic edema, cystitis, epididymitis, post-surgical trauma, and many others. In one study of chronic bronchitis, SP loosened sputum, decreased frequency of cough and increased expectoration compared to placebo.

 

D-Ribose (RiboCell™)

The Ascorbic Acid Question

 

Is it possible that Ascorbic Acid could be harmful in some people? I know that this sounds crazy, but I found out the hard way that it is true in some cases.

Here is the story....

Recently I was at some friends' house having lunch. Shortly after we went outside and started jumping on the trampoline. Within a few minutes, I was winded and decided that I needed to stop. When I got off of the trampoline my heart went into SVT (Tachycardia). I called out to my wife (a registered nurse) and she came over and took my pulse she could barely get a pulse. What she was able to count was 220 to 240 bpm.

Thankfully, we knew about Cayenne pepper helping someone that is having a Heart Attack. So my friend Russell mixed some with water and gave me some and within less than a minute my heart normalized to 140 bpm. We where confident that I was not having a Heart attack because I had no pain, numbness or shortness of breath. Well, we were really worried about this, so I went to the Doctor a few days later, just to get some tests done to rule out any heart disease... Well, thankfully everything was normal except one thing, my blood Iron content was double of normal.. And the Dr’s agreed that the trouble that I was having was probably due to my Iron level being way too high.

At first we were puzzled by this, but then we remembered that just a couple of weeks before I had started taking very large doses of Ascorbic Acid Powder.

I was probably taking 10 to 20 grams per day. When I revealed this to the Dr., they told me that Ascorbic Acid was synthetic and harmful to the body. At first I just dismissed this as Medical Propaganda, but after doing some studies on my own, I found out that Ascorbic Acid increases your Iron absorption by 30 % or more.

So with this new information, I stopped taking the Ascorbic Acid. About 8 weeks later, I had more blood tests done to check my Iron level and it had totally normalized.

The Ascorbic Acid had caused me to have “Hemochromatosis”. This is a disorder where your body stores too much Iron. Normally, it is a genetic disorder that can only be treated by blood letting. Thankfully, Ascorbic Acid induced Hemochromatosis can be reversed by simply stopping the consumption of Synthetic Ascorbic Acid.

Hemochromatosis is a fatal disorder if not treated. Untreated, the survival rate is only 18 % in 5 years. This disorder is more common than people think and most people that have it don’t know until it is too late. The person dies of Heart failure and / or Liver failure.

Ascorbic Acid induced Hemochr- omatosis has been linked to at least 5 known deaths. So, this information really needs to be made available for consumers to know about.

During this time I had been shown a book called “The Truth about Vitamins and Antioxidants” by Judith A. DeCava, MS, LNC. There is a section on Vitamin C that totally changed my mind about Vitamin C and Ascorbic Acid.

I discovered something that seems to be hidden from us. Ascorbic Acid truly is NOT Vitamin C, it is a component of Vitamin C complex. That's right ! Think about it.. Where does Ascorbic Acid come from ? It comes from Hoffman / La Roche, one of the large pharmaceutical companies. They synthesize it from glucose. Remember, we cannot make Ascorbic Acid in our body from Glucose, that is why we have to supplement or eat foods that have it.

Did you know that Ascorbic Acid does nothing to help Scurvy, but eating an orange will... Why ? Because, Ascorbic Acid is the protective antioxidant sheath for Vitamin C complex. This natural complex is the natural mixture of Rutin, Bioflavinoid complex, the K factor, the J factor, Tyrosinase, Ascorbic acid, Ascorbigen, and other co-factors.

Ascorbic Acid is only a component, you have to get the complex from a natural food source to treat Scurvy.

Ascorbic Acid is an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory agent. Yes, there is a place for ascorbic acid in our body, but it seems that it would be better to get our daily needs from a whole food source.

If you have been listening to the news lately you would have heard the alarming reports of the rapid increase in the incidents of asthma in our children. The reports say that even the “experts” can’t even give a clear reason for this unsettling fact. But none the less, this is something we have to deal with, especially if our child happens to be one of these asthma prone individuals.

Parents can control many of the symptoms and possibly even eliminate them by changing just a few things in the child’s diet and environment. Many times asthma is a symptom of an allergy. Seeing an allergy specialist can help you pin point the allergens. But many times a less expensive solution is to do a basic “clean up” in the child's diet & surroundings. Offering healthy alternatives to junk food is becoming easier today with the large selection that can be found in your local health food store. You will be surprised at how well the kids will like the taste. Another big immune system depressant is the combination of milk and sugar. This may be a hard one to avoid with children since ice cream is a big favorite among kids, but once again there are several tasty alternatives that your kids are sure to like. (ie, Tofutti Cuties, Rice Dream Treats, etc.). A rotation diet is also helpful. Also make a rule to stop using cleaners, sprays, air fresheners, hair spray, perfume etc.

Also the use of a "Dust-Free" or HEPA air filtration system really helps a lot. Keeping Pets outside and vacuuming the carpet regularly, as well as getting your carpet "Steam Cleaned" can help greatly. Also, do not let the child be around people that smoke and if a parent smokes, then the parent needs to quit ! Your child is more important than that cigarette! Try letting someone stand on your chest while your smoking that cancer stick..

Last, but definitely not least, are some supplements that help boost the immune system. D-Lenolate aka. Olive Leaf Extract (East Park Research), Homeopathic Lung (BeWell Homeopathics), Echinacea, Vitamin C Complex, Garlic, Ginko Biloba, Glyconutrients and any other Herb, Vitamin or Nutrient that will boost the immune system. Also, try to avoid foods that have synthetic ingredients like colors, dyes, preservatives, hydrogenated fats, etc. Help the asthmatic child to have a healthy diet, this makes a huge difference. I also believe that children do not need "Fluoride" in their toothpaste and drinking water. It has been proven medically that this substance is Toxic. Think about this... It is Rat Poison... Look up "Fluoride" in the encyclopedia..

Much, much more could be written about this subject, but I mainly wanted to quickly discuss some of the main things that I have found that make a big difference for the child with asthma. Note: All of these suggestions are also relevant for adults with asthma. I know that they work, I no longer have Asthma because of these suggestions. Give it a try. It can only improve you or your child's health.

Stomach and Intestinal problems affect a large amount of the western worlds population. The following list of ingredients are known to help with treating Ulcers and other intestinal problems.

DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Root)

Licorice has been well studied and is known to exhibit many pharmacological actions such as the healing of peptic ulcers, estrogenic activity, aldosterone-like action, anti-inflammatory (cortisol-like action), anti-allergic, antihepatotoxic, antineoplastic, expectorant, and antitussive activity. Most of these effects can be contributed to glycyrrhizinic acid, but other components, such as flavonoids, play a strong role in its healing properties. However, because of the glycyrrhetinic acid, there is a sodium retention property in licorice that has been known to cause high blood pressure although a cautious diet of high potassium, low-sodium will allow ingestion of licorice without concern. A form of licorice, deglycyrrhizinated licorice, may produce results in the treatment of peptic ulcers without the side effects. It should be consumed before meals.

Cayenne

Internally used as a relaxant to the stomach and colon and as a healer for ulcers. It stimulates the stomach but is not irritating. Cayenne stimulates the blood and the heart, increasing and strengthening the pulse. Use for colds, sinus, respiratory ailments, indigestion, hangover, diabetes, cramps, circulation problems, asthma, rheumatism, kidneys, and high blood pressure. We know of people who had bleeding ulcers and after having taken large doses of Cayenne for about two weeks showed complete healing of their ulcers.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract is an extremely potent antimicrobial, antiparasitic, germicidal agent. It is broad spectrum and easily tolerated (even by those with severe allergies). It is being used for an incredible variety of health concerns such as candidiasis, parasites, sinusitis, athlete's foot, colds & flu, ulcers and much more. Neem (leaf)

Neem is generally accepted in the Ayurvedic medical tradition as a therapy for ulcers and gastric discomfort. People throughout the Indian subcontinent take neem leaves for relief of stomach problems of any sort. Scientific validation of these practices is consistent in studies of the effectiveness of neem and neem extracts for gastric relief. Compounds in neem have been proven to have anti-ulcerative effects. (Garg and Bhakuni, 1984); (Garg, et al, 1991); (Pillai, et al, 1978a); (Pillai, et al, 1984). Oral doses of neem leaf extracts gave significant protection against peptic ulcers, duodenal ulcers and enhanced the healing process of gastric lesions. (Santhakumari, 1984); (Garg, et al, 1993).

Nimbidin from seed extracts taken orally prevented duodenal lesions and peptic ulcers. They provided significant reductions in acid output and peptic activity of gastric fluids. The effects were most pronounced when doses were low (20 to 40 mg/kg) and increased dosages actually reduced the effectiveness of neem's anti-ulcerative effects (Pillai, et al, 1978a); (Pillai, et al, 1980). Neem seed extracts also showed significant healing effects from this compound for existing lesions. Similar compounds have been found in leaf extracts in lesser concentrations.

Cabbage Juice

Studies have shown that raw cabbage juice can heal ulcers completely within ten days (and it also works for acid indigestion).

Probiotic Complex (Non Dairy acidophilus, Bifidus etc.)

Replenishing the gastrointestinal tract with probiotics (good bacteria) is needed to displace “bad” bacteria such as H. pylori. Killing the bad bacteria is not enough. You must re-colonize your intestinal tract with the good bacteria or else you will be more susceptible to re-infection of the bad bacteria. More than 400 different kinds of bacteria live in our gastrointestinal tract. ORLANDO, May 23 (Reuters Health) - A preliminary survey of beef and poultry sold in US supermarkets conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found relatively high levels of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to a report presented here on Tuesday. In the study, researchers analyzed strains of the Enterococcus family of bacteria in meat bought at several Washington, DC-area supermarkets.

Experts believe the spread of strains of bacteria resistant to antibiotic drugs poses a major public health threat, both in the US and globally. And many believe the widespread use of antibiotics in animal feed may be providing bacteria with fertile ground for breeding resistance to a wide range of drugs. Antibiotics are routinely added to animal feed because they boost the animals' growth rate.


Glucose Metabolism and Your Health

In today’s society we are surrounded by sweets. It seems that you can’t go anywhere and not be tempted by pastries, ice cream etc. Because of this we have become sugar junkies.

Most people don’t know that sugar can be addicting and it can also make you sick. White sugar is almost totally devoid of any nutritional value. Because of our intake of unhealthy foods, white sugar and hydrogenated fats our pancreas has had to work overtime. This, coupled with vitamin and mineral deficiencies are a possible link to the ever increasing numbers of people with diabetes.

“Herbs are Not Drugs”

Recently I received a copy of “The Complete German Commission E Monographs, Therapeutic Guide to Herbal Medicines”. This book is becoming one of the standards used for the knowledge of herbs and their properties. My only problem with this book is that they call the herbs listed therein “Drugs”. When I first saw this it made me question the validity of the whole book. However, after researching this I found that Germany is leading the way to try and bring in an International law which would make all herbs, vitamins etc. into “Drugs”. This is a way for the multinational pharmaceutical companies to finally get “rid” of those who believe in alternative therapies. The reason? You probably guessed it! MONEY… The Herb and Vitamin industry is taking their “customers” away and they don’t like it.

To show how ludicrous this ploy is, here are a few of the herbs that they are calling drugs: Aloe Vera, Coriander seed, Cinnamon, Blueberries, Garlic, etc. Their thinking is that since these herbs have been proven to help with a certain ailment, that makes it a drug. They list all of these herbs as having NO side effects, NO contraindications, and SAFE. So, my question is “Then why is it a drug?”. These herbs are FOOD.

If we don’t let our voice be heard there will SOON come a day that it will be ILLEGAL to sell or use these “foods”. Imagine being arrested because you have some blueberries with breakfast or some orange juice that has more milligrams of vitamin C than what is legal. Sound Crazy? Think this will never happen? Let me tell you, it is Crazy, but if we as Americans, Germans, Canadians, Britons, etc. don’t stand up and say NO to this nonsense it WILL happen.

Write, Call, Email, or Visit your Congressman, Senator, Dictator, King, Queen, Parliament, or whoever will listen and try to make a difference.

The use of these herbs is a right that Man has had for thousands of years and we should not lose this common law right!

A recent study, by Dr. Bruce H. Pomeranz, the principal investigator and neuro science professor at the University of Toronto, was published in the April 15, 1998 Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).  There is a lot of controversy about whether fluoride is harmful to the health of humans.  Research shows that fluoride is detrimental to the Immune system, breaks down and causes irregular formation of collagen, causes bone and muscular disorders, genetic damage, birth defects, cancer, and more. The human need for fluoride is very minute and this amount can be achieved from vegetables and other foods.  This is the only form that would not be toxic, since minerals are best utilized and eliminated from the body if they are ingested from an organic source. 

It amazes me that more people don’t realize that fluoride is harmful simply by reading the statement made on some tubes of toothpaste.  "If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison-control center immediately".  According to the FDA the reason for this warning is because after ingestion, fluoride mixes with chemicals in the stomach to form highly corrosive hydrofluoric acid, which can lead to serious injury or even death.  Since young children don’t control the swallowing reflex very well, they are particularly at risk.  

Fluoridation of city water supplies and fluoride treatments given to children at the dentist office are simply not needed and are actually causing illness and death.  The 1984 issue of Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products (Williams & Wilkins), states that fluoride is more poisonous than lead and slightly less poisonous than arsenic.  Fluoride is classified as a drug and a poison.  It is used as a pesticide against rats, mice and other small pests.  It is so toxic that 16 mg/kg of fluoride can kill a human.  This means that one-hundredth of an ounce could kill a 10-pound child and one-tenth of an ounce could kill a 100-pound adult.  Fluoride toothpaste contains up to 1 mg/ gm of fluoride and only one tube of toothpaste would be enough to kill a 25 lb. Child.  Proctor and Gamble the manufacturer of Crest toothpaste, actually acknowledges that the family sized tube of Crest could theoretically kill a small child if it was ingested.   

The following are some of the symptoms of fluoride poisoning:  nausea, vomiting (bloody), fainting, stomach cramps or pain, tremors, weakness, constipation, painful and aching bones, skin rash, sores in the mouth and on the lips, and generalized stiffness throughout the body.

 Studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association show accumulated fluoride weakens bones and increases the incidence of hip fractures.  The journal of Oral Surgery has reported mottled enamel occurring with exposure to just 0.5 ppm of fluoride. After 17 years of fluoridation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, 19.3 percent of the resident white children and 40.2 percent of black children had dental fluorosis from drinking water alone.

 Documents from the NAS Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control describe increasing numbers of children whose teeth require complex dental treatment because of excess fluoride, and adults with headaches, back pain, gastrointestinal problems, arthritic symptoms, and hyperparathyroidism, all of which are attributed to fluorosis.   These documents also report that with increased dosages of fluoride, cavities also tend to increase.  There is further evidence that fluoride can also cause immediate death as a result of cardiac arrest, possibly brought on by anaphylactic shock. 

 Evidence that industrial fluoride has been killing and crippling people has existed at least since the 1930s.  In the 1920s and 1930s the aluminum and phosphate fertilizer industries were becoming large and the large production of aluminum and fertilizer caused a severe pollution problem and fluoride was the problem.  After these companies discovered that fluoride was toxic they devised a way to profit from this waste.  It was marketed as rat poison and insecticide.  However, they soon found that these markets were not big enough so that is when they decided they could sell the idea of adding fluoride to the drinking water and tell people that it would reduce tooth decay.  The American Dental Association joined them in this campaign and ever since then we have been getting dosed up with fluoride without having our free choice to decide if we want this additive or not.    

The American Medical Association, American Dental Association, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Centers for Disease Control all know about the hazards of Fluoride, yet they do nothing to change the usage of it.  It is appalling to know this fact.  In a country that is concerned with Human Rights and Health, you would think that fluoride would have never been allowed or at least discontinued after the revealing of the mountain of proof against its use.   

Fluoride is given to us without our decision to do so and we must do whatever possible to have it banned from our water supply and all dental products.  Until the time that fluoride is removed from the water supply and dental products, we must make every effort to not ingest it.   This is relatively simple since it is ultimately ingested from water and dental products.  You can remove fluoride from your drinking water with a home water distiller or reverse osmosis unit.  Both methods effectively and safely remove fluoride from water.  As far as dental products, there are a lot of fluoride-free toothpastes available from health food stores.  You can also brush your teeth with 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, activated charcoal or aloe vera gel.  Your Dentist is probably going to be the hardest to deal with.  You can simply ask that no fluoride containing products be used during your visit.  Normally, they will comply with your wishes.  However, some dentists or dental hygienists will try and argue the need for fluoride.  In this situation you can simply tell them that your decision is based on your independent study concerning the safety of fluoride and you do not want it. 

There is a plethora of research concerning this subject and volumes have been written concerning it.  With this essay, I wanted to give enough information for the reader to gain a basic understanding about fluoride, thereby causing them to take action against its use and helping them to become healthier.

Home Births are Statistically Safer

Tthe facts are that home birth is statistically safer than hospital birth—in Texas, in the United States as a whole, and throughout the civilized world. A six-year study done by the Texas Department of Health for the years 1983-1989 revealed that infant mortality rate for non nurse midwives attending home births is three times safer than hospital birth.

When confronted with this, physicians (and hospitals) often reply that “we have to take the midwives’ basket cases and all the difficult births.” There are statistics to refute these arguments, but the comparisons and analyses are complex.

Infant mortality in the United States has consistently ranked between 13th and 22nd out of 25 industrialized nations rated by the World Health Organization each year. Countries with the lowest infant mortality rates use midwives for the majority of births, conversely, countries with the worst infant mortality rates are those with the highest proportions of obstetricians and the fewest midwives.

The medical model of birth does not provide the superior outcome that Mr. Krauthammer attributes to it. While he is entitled to his belief, he should not publish his belief as if it were fact.

Finally, lest your readers be left with the impression that, as a midwife, I am opposed to hospital births (in all cases), this is not true. I believe that physicians and hospitals have a place in total obstetrical care. Physicians and hospitals are wonderful when truly needed. Physicians and midwives should be able to work together for the benefit of their clients. But decades of experience and millions of births worldwide have shown that pregnancy is not an illness; it is a normal, natural function. It should be treated as such. Genetically Modified Foods.. Dr. Frankenstein’s Latest Creation...

We all know the story about Dr. Frankenstein’s monster and how it was an awful looking creature. Well, now there is a modern day creation that is just as awful. The problem with this creature is that by just looking at it on the surface it seems normal and harmless, however on the inside it has been totally changed into something other than what would occur naturally.

This “monster” is called Genetically Modified Foods.

Most people haven’t even heard of genetically modified foods therefore it is of no great threat to them, but the truth of the matter is that it is a “silent” threat to our health and possibly the normal ecology of all plant life as we know it.

Modifying the genes of a plant is done in “hope” of improving the plants resistance to disease and to increase the amount of food harvested for consumption. This seems like a good thing but when you get all of the facts it is not.

Let me ask you this question. If you knew that a tomato had the genes of a mouse mixed into the genetic structure of the tomato would you really want to eat the tomato? ( or maybe I should call it “Tomouseto”). Or how about a baked potato that has the genes of a scorpion in it. (Scortato).. I say NO I would not want to eat that stuff.. Would you eat a mouse and a scorpion ? Of course you would not. But if we get down to technicalities, by eating a tomato with mouse genes and a potato with scorpion genes, you are in a round about way eating a mouse and a scorpion.

This writer believes that there was no mistake made when the items that we call food were created. Every plant if left in its natural state is exactly what our body needs for nourishment.

The proponents of genetically modified foods say that the modified seeds produce better crops and the plants are more resistant to disease and insects. This is a Lie.. In our research we find that the fields containing genetically modified plants don’t grow better and they are not resistant to disease or insects. What we did find is that these crops have to have more chemicals used on them than the non modified plants.

Look at the following findings of the dangers from genetically altered foods:

Insect resistant crops and weeds

Reduction in genetic diversity

Cross species transfer of viruses and bacteria's with unknown consequences

Creation of antibiotic resistance in humans and animals

Serious dangers to insects such as ladybugs, bees and lacewing insects

As yet unknown dangers. Once released genetic mistakes can not be cleaned up. They are live and are passed on to all future generations.

Gene flow - the transfer of introduced genetic material to other crops.

Increased reliance on agro-chemicals.

Crop failures e.g. bollguard cotton in USA.

Increased residual residue limits — i.e. more chemicals retained by the plant

Domination of world agriculture markets by companies who supply the patented GE seeds and the patented chemicals.

Higher kill rate for insects, birds and animal life at crop borders.

Because we live in a highly scientific and technologically advancing world, genetic research and engineering is something that we are going to be hard pressed to get rid of. However, we, the people of the world can speak out against genetically engineered food and if enough people do this we might be able to make a difference.

The point is that we should have the choice. A food that has been produced from genetically altered seeds should be revealed to consumers instead of being hidden.

Do your own research and think about the long term consequences that this will have in the future.

Environmental Pollution and it’s effects on the Human Physiology

     It’s all around us and it seems inescapable. Pollution, the curse of the industrial age. Although we have entered the age of information, our external and internal environment continues to be violated by these unseen pollutants. Every year in America, thousands of tons of waste is dispersed into our ground water, air, land, and bodies. I find it interesting that people will make the much needed efforts in lessening or stopping the pollution in our external environment, but very few even consider their internal environment. Our body is assaulted daily by thousands of man made chemicals, of which, most didn’t exist 50 years ago. These chemicals are toxic to our body and cause a burden on our body systems, thereby causing disease and suffering that could be remedied by Lifestyle changes, the use of herbs and other supplements that are able to help the body “Clean House”.

     In most cases these toxins enter our body slowly and over time build up to levels that cause sickness. Our body is an amazing creation that has the ability to rid itself of toxins. Over time, and due to added toxins in our food, stress etc., our Liver and Kidneys are unable to effectively handle the toxic load and our body has to start “tucking” it away since it can’t get these toxins out of the body. Thankfully, we have natural means to help our body in the detoxification of this toxic load. The following, are suggestions that avail in supporting our body’s elimination of the toxin overload.

     1. Pure Water, preferably Distilled water. Because this type of water is stripped of all minerals and other impurities, there is molecular “space” available for heavy metals and other toxins to form a molecular bond to the water molecule and then can be filtered out and eliminated from the body.

     2. An herbal cleansing formula that will effectively support the detoxification of the blood, lymph, liver, kidneys, skin, and bowel.

 

 

The formula should consist of the following:

  1. Milk Thistle, Dandelion root, Licorice root, for the Liver.

  2. Uva Ursi leaves, Parsley, Cornsilk, Buchu for the Kidneys & Bladder.

  3. Burdock, Stilingia, Red Clover, & Kelp for the Blood.

  4. Cascara Sagrada bark, Apple Pectin, Ginger, Buckthorn for Bowel Cleansing.

  5. Echinacea for the Lymph.

  6. Cilantro for elimination of Heavy Metals.

  7. Cayenne in a small amount mixed with the all of the other herbs listed, will act as a catalyst by increasing blood circulation thereby taking the herbs into the organs and tissue.

     The skin will effectively be cleansed of toxins due to the elimination of waste through the Liver and Kidneys. Dry skin brushing and mild exercise are helpful in moving the lymph.

The herbal supplementation should only be used for 2 weeks to 1 month at a time. Most would do well with a 2 week cleanse twice per year. Of course, the intake of water, exercise and dry skin brushing could be done daily.

     During this detoxification cleanse, our Liver will be able to eliminate the toxic load that has built up over time and will then be able to function normally. This is very important since the main connection with toxin overload is due primarily to the Liver’s inability to function correctly after it’s toxic build up reaches maximum capacity. If the Liver doesn’t filter the blood properly, the toxins will build up in other tissues of the body, thereby causing the body systems to become sluggish and eventually lead to disease.
